Snakes, Rodents & Droughts

As a result, we can expect snakes to show up in places where they are seldom seen. It isn’t so much that we will see more snakes, because snake populations, like those of rodents, drop during a drought. But if this drought is like most that we’ve had in the past, we will be seeing more snakes than normal, and we’ll see them in places they aren’t normally found. [...]

Raccoon Invasion of a Commercial Structure in Denton, Texas

At this time of the year, mother raccoons are busy suckling their young in nests hidden away from prying eyes. The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. The photographs shown in this post were taken in the process of excluding a somewhat large colony of raccoons from a commercial structure in Denton, Texas (north of the city of Dallas), in April of 2010. Included in the colony were this mother and her five suckling babes, all of whom were ensconced in a dark, secluded nest, deep inside the eaves of the structure. [...]

An Opossum in Temple, Texas

At a relatively large retirement and nursing facility in Temple, Texas, the number of Virginia Opossums that have been observed during 2010 has increased considerably over similar observations in previous years. Possibly a lack of food, in the normal foraging range of these animals, is to blame. [...]

Fox Squirrel (Sciuris niger)

The Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger), native to North America, is the largest of the North American tree squirrels (contrasted with ground squirrels that live in burrows in the ground). These squirrels are also known as raccoon squirrels, red squirrels, stump-eared squirrels, and monkey-faced squirrels, though red squirrel is one of the more common of these expressions regularly used in rural America. The natural range of this species includes the eastern and New England states, southern provinces of Canada, and west to the Dakotas, Colorado, and Texas. [...]

Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis)–General Information

The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a medium sized skunk with a robust body whose black fur is divided, laterally, by a white stripe that extends from the proximal neck to the tip of its bushy tail. The genus Mephitis (literally “stench”) is a member of the family Mephitidae, which consists entirely of animals that have the unique ability to spray musk from specialized anal scent glands for defensive purposes. By contrast, civit cats of various species throughout the world possess anal musk glands that are used to mark territories, but are not used as a means of defense. [...]

Texas Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus)

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is native to South America. In the process of its natural migration, its range slowly enlarged. By the late 1800′s, it could be found throughout central America, Mexico, and the Rio Grande valley of the United States. About this same time period, the armadillo was intentionally introduced by humans into Florida. Today its range has continued northward into Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, the gulf states, and northeast as far as New York. [...]
